Andes Mountain Coffee

The Andes region of Ecuador is renowned for producing some of the world's finest coffees. The region's coffee farms are located at elevations ranging from 1,200 to 2,000 meters above sea level

Coffee production in the region dates back to the 18th century when Spanish colonizers introduced coffee plants to the region. The high altitude of the Andes Mountains, results in a slower maturation process for the coffee beans, which leads to a denser and more flavorful coffee beans

The beans are carefully hand-picked in Loja, Pichincha, and Zamora provinces. They are sorted, and processed to ensure that only the highest quality beans are used. The region's coffee is characterized by its bright acidity, fruity and floral notes, and a clean finish

The Andean Tapestry: Where Elevation and Passion Intersect

Nestled amidst the soaring peaks of the Andes, the origins of Andes Mountain Coffee are steeped in a combination of geographical majesty and agricultural passion. These mountains stretch their rugged spine along the western edge of South America, shaping the climate, the culture, and the very essence of the coffee that grows upon their flanks. Here, the air is rarefied, the soil is imbued with millennia of mineral deposits from ancient eruptions, and the biodiversity is as rich as the history of the land itself

Coffee growing in the Andes is a practice of patience and perseverance. The high-altitude terrain presents a challenging yet rewarding canvas for coffee growers. The steep slopes demand careful, often manual cultivation techniques, ensuring that every coffee plant receives the individual attention it needs. This labor-intensive process, coupled with organic farming practices, reflects the growers' deep respect for the land that has sustained their communities for generations

Every aspect of the coffee's origin contributes to its unique character. The Andes' natural barriers provide a sanctuary from large-scale industrial farming, preserving traditional methods that have been refined to perfection. The clear mountain waters that irrigate the crops, the biodiversity that protects against pests, and the cultural heritage of the Andean people all intertwine to create a coffee that is as vibrant and dynamic as the mountains from which it hails

Andean Typica and Criollo: A Heritage Steeped in the Clouds

The Andes Mountains are more than a towering range; they are the nurturing grounds for two of the most cherished coffee varietals: Typica and Criollo. Typica, the progenitor of many Arabica coffee plants, has found an ideal sanctuary in the Andean altitudes, where its beans develop a clarity of flavor and crisp acidity that is the hallmark of high-grown excellence. Criollo, a lesser-known but equally remarkable varietal, is often likened to the fine cocoa that shares its name, offering a sublime, nuanced cup that is the hidden treasure of the Andean coffee portfolio

The Typica varietal in the Andes is characterized by its tall stature and elongated beans, necessitating careful cultivation as it reaches skyward, as if trying to touch the clouds themselves. This varietal demands meticulous attention, thriving on the precise balance of sunlight and the cool embrace of the mountain breeze. The result is a coffee with a delicate, often floral or citrus-laden profile, revered by aficionados for its clean, refined taste

The Criollo varietal, on the other hand, is a testament to the Andean capacity to surprise and delight even the most seasoned coffee enthusiasts. While it grows alongside Typica, Criollo distinguishes itself with a richer, more chocolate-forward profile that is both bold and smooth. It is a varietal steeped in tradition, often associated with ancient practices and a time-honored cultivation method that prioritizes quality and sustainability over yield

Together, Typica and Criollo represent the duality of Andean coffee culture—a harmonious blend of the classic and the distinctive. As growers work the steep slopes, they cultivate these varietals with an understanding of their unique demands and virtues. The Typica offers a cup that is the very definition of what high-altitude coffee should be, while the Criollo is like the discovery of a new favorite melody in a classic symphony. Each sip is an invitation to explore the deep, varied topography of Andean coffee, where heritage and innovation coalesce to create a truly exceptional coffee experience
